It was with equal measures of excitement and trepidation that I set out last Saturday morning to make my way to the Hertfordshire countryside to meet with the guys at Ashmei Running having been shortlisted as a potential brand ambassador. Yes, you read that right. Me, a brand ambassador! I admit the closest thing I’ve ever done that could be described as ambassadorial is wearing a suit to work but by some miracle (or possible administrative error) the good people at Ashmei had read my application and shortlisted me for their programme.
Sounds exciting, right? And it was. The reason for my trepidation was the prospect of recording a 60 second video of my running story – where it began, why I run, my achievements, and my aspirations…all in 60 seconds. Another cause for trepidation was my hopeless sense of direction and complete inability to be on time. Ever. My friends and family will happily testify to this. In fact, my wife would tell you that I was late to our first date having gotten lost on the way!
Despite the video, which I’m sure I bungled my way through, the day was a thoroughly fantastic experience. We were treated to some great hospitality, given the chance to find out more about the history of the Ashmei brand from founder Stuart, hear some fabulous and inspirational stories from the other candidates, and enjoy a pleasant run through the Ashridge estate.
I can’t think of a better way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Having said that, we were warned that there may be a werewolf on the loose within the Ashridge Estate and so wondered this was a more extreme selection process than we expected. The horror of the 60 second video was suddenly a distant memory! Thankfully we encountered no werewolves on the run and all returned safely to Ashmei HQ.
The Ashmei story is one I really admire. Its a story of bravery and defying convention. As a sporting brand Ashmei really stand out from the crowd. They are doing something different to any other sports brand by producing stylish, high quality, high performance gear. Put simply Ashmei name the best running gear in the world.
I came away invigorated by the experience and really inspired to get back to full training following my injury troubles of 2013 and turn my challenge, target 250, into a reality. So that’s what I’m doing. The blog is finally here and my training is once again taking shape. I don’t know if I’ve got what it takes to be an Ashmei Ambassador, and certainly felt inadequate compared to the other candidates, but I’ve definitely learnt something about myself from the experience. This simply isn’t something I would have had the courage to do a year ago, so I’m proud of myself for having done it, regardless of the result. After all, that’s what target 250 is all about.
